Curriculum Student Research

Honors students are encouraged to begin research as soon as they arrive at Adelphi. Some students enter biology and physics laboratories as early as their freshman year, and recently even Honors freshmen have been among those students invited to attend the National Conference for Undergraduate Research. Described below are a sampling of the areas in which Honors students work.

---
Beginning on campus

Honors students often begin their independent research experience by expanding and developing a paper written for a course. Others, with our advice, seek out extracurricular research opportunities. Physics provides original research opportunities in laser laboratories. There is a great variety of work currently being done in biology. Many Honors students work with Professor Lawrence Hobbie whose research in genetics is supported by the National Science Foundation. Other students pursue a variety of projects in environmental studies and forensic or physical anthropology.

---
Off-campus research and internships

Students also arrange for research off campus during the semester. Some students eventually become co-authors for the studies in which they participate with professional researchers. For example, psychology majors have found opportunities in studies conducted in area hospitals. The off-campus work that is a regular part of social work and education often leads students into research projects as well.

---
Summer research and internships.

Some students continue their on-campus research through the summer. But the summer brings new opportunities both for work on campus and off campus. In fact, the research students do on campus during the year often qualifies them for attractive summer programs.

The Sciences
Every summer, students have the opportunity to do research in physical anthropology and ancient archaeology in Greece with Professor Agelarakis. Some Honors students have elected to go more than once and take advantage of the rare opportunity to work on ongoing archaeological digs in Greece. Other students have built on their Adelphi research programs at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole; in the Material Science Center at Cornell University; in the Medical Achievement Advancement Program at the University of Virginia; in the Adventures in Veterinary Medicine Program at Tufts University; and in the atomic physics group at Princeton University.

The Social Sciences
Students in political science and government have worked both locally and further afield. Adelphi's program for internships in Washington, DC is active in the summer as well as during the school year. Another prestigious venue in which Honors College students have shone is the New York City Government Scholars Program.

The Arts and Humanities
Recent students have participated in a variety of programs both on and off the campus. Some projects include College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, MA and Actors Theatre of Louisville. On the campus, students have found positions with the New York State Summer School of the Arts. Some students have earned internships with local television channels and firms such as Polygram Records assisting in graphic design. Communications students have found exciting work in mentoring internships on Madison Avenue in Manhattan.

Business
Honors students are active in the Student Organization in Business. Summer internships with firms like Deloitte & Touche lead to continued employment during the year and to full-time jobs after graduation.
